Media Release - 2022 Hinchinbrook Local Government Area Biosecurity Plan Now Available

4th August 2022

Under the Biosecurity Act 2014, Councils are required to have a Biosecurity Plan for invasive biosecurity matters within their local government area. The plan provides strategic direction for the management of priority weeds and pest animals on all land tenure within the Hinchinbrook Local Government area and has been developed for the entire community.

The annual review of the Hinchinbrook Local Government Area Biosecurity Plan (HLGABP) was held on Thursday 14 April 2022 with Council and relevant stakeholders aiming to reduce the impacts and prevent the introduction and spread of invasive plants and animals within the Hinchinbrook Shire Council area through a cooperative approach from all stakeholders.

The desired outcomes are for the community to be informed and knowledgeable of their General Biosecurity Obligations (GBO) and take ownership for invasive plant and animal management for lands under their control.  It further aims for stakeholders to be committed to undertaking coordinated management of invasive plants and animals, to reduce the impacts and minimise the spread of existing species, as well as prevent the introduction of new invasive plants and animals in the shire.

On Tuesday 26 July 2022, Council noted the review of the 2022 HLGABP, with the next review scheduled for April 2023. The current HLGABP can be found on Council’s website, Land and Pest Management page.

Partners with Council involved in the development of the HLGABP are Far North Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQROC), Department of Resources, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Biosecurity Queensland, Department of Transport and Main Roads, Hancock Queensland Plantations, Department of Environment and Science, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Terrain NRM, Port of Townsville Limited, Herbert Cane Productivity Services Limited and Herbert River Catchment and Landcare Group.
