The Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act) provides people with the right to access documents or information held by Hinchinbrook Shire Council which are not usually publicly available and encourages Council to release documents unless they contain information which is exempt or which is contrary to public interest.
The Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act) provides a formal means of requesting access to, and amendment of your personal information. Formal access applications under Right to Information or Information Privacy should only be made as a last resort, where information is not otherwise accessible.
The Right to Information Act 2009 and the Information Privacy Act 2009 aims to:
- Make more information available;
- Provide equal access to information across all sectors of the community; and
- Provide appropriate protection for individuals' privacy.
This legislation replaces the former Freedom of Information Act 1992.
