New Ingham Cemetery Masterplan

In March 2022, Council engaged Consultants to carry out a Masterplan for the New Ingham Cemetery to guide the long-term vision for the site.

The aim of the Masterplan is to coordinate the development of the site and consider the potential for beautification and efficiencies whilst offering more interment choices throughout the New Ingham Cemetery and to maximise its service life. The masterplan responds to current demand and emerging trends whilst considering operational constraints, Council budget and community expectations.

The implementation of the proposed Masterplan strategies, including realigning roads, removing unnecessary access ways, and utilising boundary space, will create additional capacity.

 The main feature changes will consist of:

  • Two main entrances;
  • Additional parking with tree planting for shade;
  • Proposed public Mausolea (subject to demand);
  • Proposed additional plaque lawn graves (subject to demand), generally located along the cemetery’s road frontage or close to existing plaque lawn sections;
  • Proposed additional full monumental (subject to demand), generally located close to existing monumental sections;
  • Introduction of new ‘Headstone in garden bed’ lawn graves;
  • Introduction of memorial gardens or granite columbaria (for cremated remains) in existing and new garden beds;
  • Road realignment to maximise land use;
  • New path to office and toilets to improve wayfinding;
  • Upgrade of signage to improve wayfinding and grave search;
  • In keeping with trends, all new sections will be non-denominational; and
  • When cemetery is full, reclaim selected roads for grave infills to extend the life of the cemetery.

Stage One works are to consist of developing sufficient burial areas to provide a full range of interments including:

  • Public mausoleum;
  • Full monumental;
  • Plaque lawn;
  • Headstone lawn;
  • Headstone in garden bed grave;
  • Columbarium; and
  • Memorial gardens for ash interments.

Stage One works also include:

  • Renovation of selected garden beds;
  • Additional tree planting;
  • New path to facilities (office and toilet);
  • Signage upgrades;
  • Closing off two entries; and
  • Realignment of part of the internal road network.
