Applying for a Food Business Licence

At least 10 business days prior to opening your food business you will need to complete a Food Business Licence Application Form and pay the relevant non-refundable application fee.

Forms can be found on Council's website, Business Licencing page under Business Licensing Application Forms.

If you construct a new food premises, the business will be inspected prior to the issue of a Food Business Licence.

Once your application is approved, you will be sent an invoice for the annual licence fee. Not for Profit Community and Charitable Organisations are not charged licencing fees. All licences expire on 31 August. Licence fees for new businesses are calculated on a quarterly pro-rata basis. For example, if you open your business between:

  • 1 July - 30 September, you will pay the full annual fee;
  • 1 October - 31 December, you will pay 75% of the annual fee;
  • 1 January - 31 March, you will pay 50% of the annual fee; or
  • 1 April - 30 June, you will pay 25% of the annual fee.

Once payment of the licence fee is received, and an Authorised Officer approves your application, you will be issued your Food Business Licence. The Food Act 2006 requires that this licence is displayed in a prominent position at your business.

In accordance with the Food Act 2006, you have up to 30 days after the issue of your licence to provide the name and evidence of the qualifications of your elected Food Safety Supervisor.

Please note that Food Business Licences are not transferable.
