Applying for a Food Business Licence

At least 10 business days prior to opening your business you will need to complete a Food Business Licence Application Form and pay the relevant non-refundable application fee.

Once your application is approved, you will be sent an invoice for the annual licence fee. All food business licences expire on 31 August. If you constructed a new food premises, the business will be inspected prior to the issue of a food business licence.

Licence fees for new businesses are calculated on a quarterly pro rata basis. For example, if you open your business:

  • within three months of the 31 August expiry date you will pay one quarter of the annual fee
  • between three and six months from 31 August, you will pay half of the annual fee
  • between six and nine months from 31 August, you will pay three quarters of the annual fee
  • between nine and 12 months, you will pay the full annual fee

Once payment of the licence fee is received you will be issued your food business licence. The Food Act 2006 requires that this licence is displayed in a prominent position at your business.

In accordance with the Food Act 2006, you have up to 30 days after the issue of your licence to provide evidence of the qualifications of your elected food safety supervisor.

Please note that Food Business Licences are not transferable.
