Hinchinbrook Shire Council is a proud member of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority's Reef Guardian Council's program.
The Great Barrier Reef is an important part of our region, economy and identity. As a Reef Guardian Council, we are doing our bit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and land-based impacts on the Reef.
Council have an important role in water, waste and land management, planning for sustainable population growth, approving environmentally sound developments, and working to address climate change. Each of the decisions we make can impact the amount of greenhouse gas emissions we as a community produce. We are committed to building the resilience of the Great Barrier Reef through our Reef Guardian Action Plan.
The Reef Guardian Councils program is a collaborative stewardship arrangement between local councils in the Great Barrier Reef catchment and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Hinchinbrook Shire Council is one of 19 councils involved in the program.
In October 2022, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority released the Reef Guardian Councils Climate change initiatives snapshot which showcases the actions, both big and small, that councils (including us) within the Reef Guardian Councils program are taking to help protect the Reef from the biggest threat to coral reefs worldwide.
See page 20 of the snapshot for an overview of some of the activities your Council is developing or implementing to reduce our community's carbon footprint.
