How to Nominate

Nominations for the 2026 Australia Day Awards are now open!

We’re calling on the Hinchinbrook community to help shine a light on the everyday legends who make our Shire a better place to live, work, and connect. If you know an individual or group who deserves recognition for their outstanding contributions — big or small — this is your chance to say thank you. Nominees must reside within the Hinchinbrook Shire.

How to Submit a Nomination

To nominate someone, you’ll need to complete the official 2026 Australia Day Awards Nomination Form.

Nominations have been extended now to 5.00pm Tuesday 6 January 2026.

Supporting documentation may also be provided with your nomination form if you feel it will assist the judges in making their decision.  

Award Ceremony

Award recipients will be officially announced at the Australia Day Celebrations on Monday 26 January 2026 at the Hinchinbrook Shire Hall, 25 Lannercost Street, Ingham

Australia Day Award Categories
Award Criteria
Citizen of the Year 

Outstanding achievement and leadership in the local community.
Demonstrated selfless commitment, application and dedication, involvement in activities that promote the welfare and wellbeing of the community.

 

Nominee must be 27 years or older on 26 January next

Young Citizen of the Year 

Outstanding achievement and leadership in the local community.
Demonstrated selfless commitment, application and dedication, involvement in activities that promote the welfare and wellbeing of the community.

 

Nominee must not be more than 27 years of age on 26 January next

Individual Achievement  Presented to a person who has made a significant contribution to local community group/s either as an official, coach office bearer or in some other official or volunteer capacity
Senior Cultural 

Significant achievement and contribution in the field of the arts and/or involvement with an organisation that enhances the development of the arts, culture and entertainment

 

Nominee must be 18 years or older on 26 January next

Junior Cultural 

Significant achievement and contribution in the field of the arts and/or involvement with an organisation that enhances the development of the arts, culture and entertainment

 

Nominee must not be more than 18 years of age on 26 January next

Community Events of the Year  To be presented to the person or group who has staged the most outstanding community event during the year
Senior Sport

Significant achievement and contribution in a non-professional sporting field. 

 

Nominee must be 18 years or older on 26 January next

Junior Sport 

Significant achievement and contribution in a non-professional sporting field.

 

Nominee must not be more than 18 years of age on 26 January next
