Local Councils to meet for their Northern Alliance Conference

Over 100 delegates will meet in Ingham next week for the inaugural Conference and General Meeting of the Northern Alliance of Councils Inc (NAOC).

The NAOC represents north Australian local governments whose area, is north of the Tropic of Capricorn. This includes local governments in the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

Current membership comprises of 27 Councils from Mackay through to Isaac Regional Council, west to Mt Isa and north to the Torres Straits. 

Charters Towers Regional Council Mayor and President of the Executive, Northern Alliance of Councils Inc, Cr Liz Schmidt said the conference will bring “new perspectives and ideas on matters of importance to local government and its stakeholders.

“This Alliance is a great thing for the North. It provides an opportunity for all the membership Councils to network and to work together to influence Federal and State Governments about issues that impact our local areas.”

The 3 day conference will bring a host of guest speakers who will address a range of topics including “Reform in the Local Government Sector” and “North Queensland – Future Forward”, “Regional Business Survival” and “Regional Innovation – Building Communities”. 

“The Conference is themed ‘Future Forward’ and as a group of northern Councils we want to develop regional strategies and realise our potential as a collective group to empower the North.” said Cr Schmidt.

The Conference will also showcase the Hinchinbrook region with day time and evening events.  

Hinchinbrook Shire Council Mayor, Cr Ramon Jayo said he hoped to meet with delegates and wished the conference every success.

“I wish the Northern Alliance of Councils well in their deliberations and hope that the presentations and networking time deliver positive outcomes for the delegates and their communities.”
