$750,000 Allocated to Capping Design for Warrens Hill Landfill

28th June 2019

Hinchinbrook Shire Council has allocated $750,000 in the 2019-2020 Budget for the Warrens Hill Waste Management Facility Landfill Cap Project.

Councillor Lancini said “The funding allocated in this year’s Budget will be utilised to undertake an investigation and the design of an engineered final cover capping system for the non-operational Stage 1 area of Warrens Hill Landfill.”

“The capping system is required to meet stringent guidelines for design and construction and will need to specifically address the sites location, suit our unique climatic conditions and consider the long term use of the area.”

Council confirmed that the physical placement of the landfill cap would need to be undertaken during dry conditions and would most likely take place during Winter, 2020.

“Council is committed to managing the risks of the legacy landfill and complying with the State Governments new Waste Strategy for Queensland. We are moving towards an era where most waste will be recycled and landfills will become a thing of the past.”
