Transit lanes and speed limits help protect Hinchinbrook’s marine habitats and wildlife. The region supports one of the largest remaining dugong populations, along with marine turtles and other sensitive species.

  • Hinchinbrook Channel – directs vessels into deeper water away from marine habitats
Boat speeds and wildlife protection
  • Travel at 25 knots or less within transit lanes
  • Reduce speed below 10 knots in Dugong Protection Areas
  • Slow down when marine animals are nearby
