Burial Register Search

Council maintains records of people interred within Council cemeteries.

The Online Burial Register allows you to locate the resting place of a loved one or assist with family history and genealogy research. 

The register includes records for: 

  • Hinchinbrook Shire Council cemeteries 

  • Victoria Estate Cemetery (privately owned) 

Records are updated regularly as new interments occur and historical information is reviewed and improved.

Search tips

To improve your search results: 

  • Search using all or part of a name (first name or surname) 

  • Try alternative spellings 

  • Filter by cemetery if known 

Tip: Using less information can sometimes produce better results. Many records have been transcribed from older burial registers, where handwriting can be difficult to interpret. For example, a surname such as “Anderson” may have been recorded as “Andersen.” If your search does not return a match, try entering only part of the name (e.g. “Ander”) to broaden the results and capture possible variations.

While Council makes every effort to ensure the information is accurate, records are only as reliable as past and current recording practices. 

Council does not guarantee the accuracy or completeness of all entries in the Burial Register. 

Missing or incorrect records

Some records may be incomplete or unavailable due to: 

  • illegible handwriting 

  • missing documentation 

  • damaged burial maps

Amending burial records

Council can update official burial records where supporting documentation is provided. 

To request a correction or addition, please email your evidence, along with a copy of a Birth or Death Certificate, to council@hinchinbrook.qld.gov.au  

Note: Council may amend a record where there is sufficient evidence that an error has been made. For example, if the register records a person as “John”, but family records, headstone information and archived Council documentation consistently identify the person as “Jack.” However, Council cannot amend records based solely on newspaper articles or family history research without supporting evidence. 

 

What information is available?

Current online records may include: 

  • Name 

  • Date of death 

  • Age 

  • Gender 

  • Cemetery location and plot details 

Additional information, such as date of birth or grave photographs, may become available in the future. 

Additional services

If you require a photograph of a grave, please contact Council to request this service. 

You can also obtain a Birth or Death Certificate through Queensland Births, Deaths and Marriages, which includes burial or cremation details.
