Not all properties in the Shire are connected to Council’s reticulated water network.
Smart meters
Smart meters make it easier to monitor and manage your daily water use. They help you track daily consumption and can alert you to potential leaks early – putting information at your fingertips.
Council began installing smart water meters across the Shire in 2019. All new 20mm water connections are also smart water meters.
What are automatic water meters?
Council have two type of meters:
Both options automatically record water usage and send data hourly rate to the Hinchinbrook H2O online portal, giving you access to up-to-date information aout your water use.

Checking your water meter regularly can help you find leaks early and avoid unnecessary costs.
How to read your water meter
Your water meter measures the amount of water used on your property. The main numbers displayed show cumulative water use in kilolitres.
To check your usage:
- Record the meter reading;
- Avoid using water for at least two hours;
- Check the meter again; and
- If the reading has changed, a leak may be present.
Signs you may have a leak
Common signs of water leaks include:
Leaks are often caused by faulty pipes, fixtures, irrigation systems or appliances.
What to do if you have a leak
Leaks on the customer side of the meter are the property owner’s responsibility.
Acting early can help reduce water loss and potential property damage.

Connecting water to your property
We provide new water meter connections for residential, commercial, industrial and fireline services. The cost of a new connection depends on the size and type of connection required.
To apply for a new water connection:
