Marine access

We manage a network of marine facilities that support both local use and visitor access to some of North Queensland’s most iconic coastal destinations. 

The region is widely recognised as a gateway to Hinchinbrook Island National Park and the Palm Island Group, offering world-class fishing, boating and access to the Great Barrier Reef. 

Our jetties and boat ramps play an important role in connecting the community, supporting tourism, and enabling commercial and recreational marine activities. 

Jetties and wharves

Council maintains the following jetties and wharves: 

  • Dungeness Fishing Jetty, Lucinda 

  • Dungeness Commercial Jetty, Lucinda 

  • Dungeness Jetty, Lucinda 

  • Yanks Jetty, Orpheus Island 

These facilities provide key access points for: 

  • Recreational fishing 

  • Tourism and charter operators 

  • Marine transport and servicing 

Boat ramps

Public boat ramps are located throughout the Shire, providing convenient and safe access for boating and fishing across the region. 

Dungeness Boat Ramp (Lucinda) 

Dungeness Road, Lucinda QLD 4850 

The region’s primary and most popular boating hub. 

  • Four-lane concrete ramp 

  • Vessel servicing pontoon 

  • Boat wash-down facilities 

  • Large sealed parking area 

  • Security lighting and toilets 

Access to: 

  • Hinchinbrook Channel 

  • Hinchinbrook Island 

  • Great Barrier Reef 

Good to know: 

  • Located just minutes from Lucinda township 

  • Ideal for offshore, island and estuary access 

 

Mona Landing Boat Ramp (Halifax) 

Mona Road, Halifax QLD 4850 

A quiet, sheltered ramp located on the Herbert River. 

  • Single-lane gravel ramp 

  • Small gravel parking area 

  • Accessible in most weather conditions 

Access to: 

  • Herbert River system 

  • Hinchinbrook Channel (approx. 15 minutes downstream) 

Best suited for: 

  • Estuary fishing 

  • Smaller vessels 

 

Taylors Beach Boat Ramp 

The Esplanade / John Dory Street, Taylors Beach QLD 4850 

A convenient estuary access point in a popular fishing village. 

  • Double-lane concrete ramp 

  • Boat wash-down facilities 

  • Security lighting and toilets 

Access to: 

  • Victoria Inlet 

  • Hinchinbrook Channel 

  • Palm Island Group 

Good to know: 

  • Accessible at high tide only 

  • Popular for estuary fishing and crabbing 

 

Forrest Beach Boat Ramp 

Wattle Street, Forrest Beach QLD 4850 

A coastal launch point providing access to offshore waters and island groups. 

  • Single-lane concrete ramp 

  • Large bitumen car park 

  • Toilets and wash-down facilities 

  • Security lighting 

Access to: 

  • Palm Island Group 

  • Orpheus and Pelorus Islands 

  • Great Barrier Reef 

Good to know: 

  • Exposed to tides and weather conditions 

  • Users should check conditions before launching 

 

Cassady Beach Boat Ramp 

Cassady Beach Road, Cassady Beach QLD 4850 

A smaller, quieter ramp suited to local use. 

  • Single-lane concrete ramp 

  • Small parking area 

  • Boat wash-down facilities 

Access to: 

  • Local creeks and estuaries 

  • Inshore fishing areas 

Good to know: 

  • Not accessible at low tide 

  • Best suited to smaller vessels

All users of Council marine facilities must comply with:

Subordinate Local Law 4 (Local Government Controlled Areas, Facilities and Roads) 2012.(PDF, 152KB)

Users are encouraged to: 

  • Operate vessels safely 

  • Follow all signage and regulations 

  • Respect shared community spaces
