Hinchinbrook Shire Library is a shared community space where people come to read, learn and spend time in a welcoming environment — whether you’re visiting the main library in Ingham or the Halifax Sub‑Branch. 

Both locations offer a place to slow down, explore ideas and access support, whether you’re borrowing a book, helping children discover reading, using computers, or finding a quiet space to focus.

From everyday visits to planned programs, the library is here to support learning and connection across the community. 

This page helps you plan your visit and learn about the services available at each location, so you can make the most of your time at the library in whichever way suits you best. 

Joining the library is free and easy. 

A library membership allows you to: 

  • Borrow physical items 

  • Access the digital library, including eBooks and eAudiobooks 

  • Use self‑service checkout 

  • Attend programs and events 

Membership is available for adults and children (with parent or guardian consent).

How to visit and what to expect

The library is open to residents and visitors of all ages and is designed to be a comfortable, inclusive place for reading, learning and connection. 

When you visit, you can: 

  • Browse and borrow books, magazines and other items 

  • Use quiet study areas or public computers 

  • Attend programs and events 

  • Ask friendly library staff for help finding resources or information 

Whether you’re staying awhile or just dropping in, library staff are happy to assist. 

Self-service checkout

Skip the queue and borrow items in just a few clicks. 

The self‑service checkout area allows library members to loan books, magazines and other items independently, making visits quicker and more convenient. 

Library staff will still be on hand to issue items and assist if needed. We’re excited to offer this service and hope it helps you spend less time waiting — and more time enjoying the library. 

How to use self‑service checkout at the library 

  1. Have your library card ready
  2. Ensure the screen is on the Aurora loan display
  3. Scan the barcode on your library card
  4. Scan the barcode on each item
  5. (barcodes may be on the front, inside or back of the item) 
  6. A receipt will be emailed to the address listed on your library membership 

If you need help at any stage, staff are always happy to assist. 

Other options available at self‑service 

You can also: 

  • Search the library catalogue 

  • Reserve books 

  • Maintain your library card details 

  • Search the State Library of Queensland catalogue 

  • Create lists of your favourite authors and series 

Computers, wi‑fi and printing

The library provides access to technology to support study, work and everyday tasks. 

Available services include: 

  • Public computers 

  • Free Wi‑Fi 

  • Printing and scanning 

These services are available during opening hours. Some limits or costs may apply. Visit Council's Fees & Charges for more information.

Library staff can assist if you need help using computers or printing documents.
