Driveways and Property Access

If you are planning to install, upgrade or maintain a driveway or property access, there are a few important things you need to know to ensure your access is safe, compliant and appropriately approved prior to commencing works. 

Your Responsibilities 

As a property owner, you are responsible for: 

  • Constructing and maintaining your driveway or property access; 

  • Ensuring your access is safe for vehicles and pedestrians; and 

  • Making sure your works do not impact drainage or create hazards. 

Before You Start Work 

Any work within a road reserve (including footpaths, road shoulders or verges) requires Council approval before construction begins. 

This includes, but is not limited to: 

  • New driveways and accesses;  

  • Upgrades or changes to existing access; and/or 

  • Pipe crossings or drainage works. 

To apply, you must complete a Private Works in Road Reserve Permit Application(PDF, 254KB) and pay the applicable application fee in accordance with Council’s Schedule of Fees and Charges, at time of lodgement. 

Please note, works cannot commence until you have received an approved Private Works in Road Reserve Permit.  

Your approval will specify the currency period, conditions of approval, applicable construction standards, and approved plans that must be followed when undertaking the works.
