Local and state-controlled roads

Council is responsible for the operation and maintenance of most local roads within the Shire.

Some major transport corridors and highways are State‑controlled roads, which are managed by the Queensland Government through the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).

Knowing whether a road is Council‑controlled or State‑controlled helps ensure maintenance requests, condition updates and enquiries are directed to the correct authority.

Council‑controlled roads

Council‑controlled roads include: 

  • Local urban and rural roads 

  • Suburban streets 

  • Unsealed access roads 

During periods of wet weather or flooding, conditions on key Council‑controlled feeder roads are monitored and reported through Council’s Disaster Dashboard, with updates provided at approximately 7.00am and 2.00pm as required.

State‑controlled roads

State‑controlled roads are managed and maintained by TMR. These roads play an important regional and freight role and are monitored separately from Council’s local road network. State‑controlled roads within the Hinchinbrook Shire include:
