Borrowing from the Hinchinbrook Shire Library is simple and flexible, giving you access to books, magazines and other materials in ways that suit your lifestyle.

Whether you prefer browsing the shelves, placing holds online or managing your loans from home, the library offers easy options to help you find what you need and keep track of your borrowing.

Library catalogue

The library catalogue is your starting point for discovering what’s available.

Using the catalogue, you can:

  • Search for books, magazines and other library items

  • Check item availability

  • Place holds or reservations

  • Build reading lists and save favourites

The catalogue can be accessed online or with assistance from library staff during your visit.

Borrowing items

Library members can borrow a wide range of items from the Hinchinbrook Shire Library.

Borrowing conditions include:

  • Loan periods that vary depending on item type

  • Limits on the number of items borrowed at one time

  • Conditions to ensure fair access for all members

Library staff are happy to help explain borrowing options and assist with check‑out, including self‑service checkout.

Renewals

If you need more time, many items can be renewed — provided they are not reserved by another member.

Renewals can be managed:

  • Online through your library account

  • In person at the library

  • With help from library staff

Renewing items helps you keep enjoying your borrowing while allowing others fair access.

Interlibrary loans

If an item isn’t available, the Interlibrary Loan Service may be able to help.

Interlibrary loans allow library members to request material that is not held locally or available through the Rural Libraries Queensland (RLQ) catalogue.

Before you make a request

Before requesting an interlibrary loan, please:

  • Confirm the item is not available through the RLQ network

This helps ensure requests are processed as efficiently as possible.

How to request an interlibrary loan

To submit a request, please email library@hinchinbrook.qld.gov.au with:

  • Details of the item or items you would like to request
(such as title, author and publication details)

  • Your name

  • Your phone number (for verification)

Library staff will review the request and contact you if further information is required or when the item becomes available.

Interlibrary loans are subject to availability and conditions set by the lending library.

Managing your library account

Your library account helps you stay organised and in control of your borrowing.

With your account, you can:

  • View current loans

  • Check due dates

  • Renew eligible items

  • Place and manage reservations

Library staff can assist you with accessing or updating your account details if needed.
