Development Incentives

Hinchinbrook Shire Council is committed to growing a strong, sustainable local economy and actively supports new development that brings jobs, housing and investment to the region.

Council recognises that keeping development costs competitive is critical to attracting investment.

To support viable projects, Council may offer waivers or reductions of development application fees and infrastructure charges for developments that make efficient use of existing trunk infrastructure.

How incentives may apply

Incentives may be considered for developments that:

  • utilise available capacity in existing trunk infrastructure networks;
  • do not require additional trunk infrastructure at Council’s cost;
  • deliver Preferred Development Types as outlined in the Guideline, such as housing, tourism, employment and retirement accommodation; and
  • must be completed or substantially commenced within 12 months of the receipt of a development approval.

How to apply

Requests for fee or infrastructure charge waivers must be submitted in writing at the same time as the development application, prior to any fees or charges being paid. Applications must:

  • demonstrate compliance with eligibility criteria;
  • outline the economic benefits to the Hinchinbrook Shire in terms of sustained jobs, housing, or construction impact; and
  • identify the applicant/ project team and include appropriate development plans.
