Learning how our waste and recycling systems work helps us all make better choices. We offer a range of education and resources for residents, schools, businesses and community groups to support correct recycling, waste reduction and sustainability. Use the information below to discover education programs, waste facility tours and practical learning opportunities.

Waste Education 

We support waste education for schools, community groups and organisations to help build long‑term sustainable behaviours. 

Education opportunities may include: 

  • school‑based waste and recycling education 

  • community information sessions 

  • tailored presentations on waste reduction and correct recycling 

Programs are designed to suit different age groups and community needs. 

If your school or group is interested in waste education, contact Council to discuss available options. 

We can support community groups, businesses and organisations with targeted waste education. 

Support may include: 

  • presentations on best‑practice waste management 

  • waste audits to identify opportunities to reduce landfill 

  • practical advice to improve recycling outcomes 

This support helps organisations better understand their waste streams and make improvements that benefit both the environment and operational efficiency.

Waste Facility Tours 

We offer free, guided waste facility tours to help residents, students and community groups understand what happens to waste and recycling after it is collected. 

Tours provide a behind‑the‑scenes look at how waste is managed and may cover: 

  • how waste and recyclables are sorted and processed 

  • what can and can’t be recycled 

  • the importance of reducing contamination 

  • safety and environmental controls facing ourwaste facilities 

Tours may include visits to: 

  • Warrens Hill Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre, where participants learn how a modern landfill operates and what items can be reused or recycled

  • the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Townsville, offering an up‑close view of how the contents of our yellow‑lidded bins are sorted, packed and prepared for future recycling 

Tours are subject to availability and safety requirements and are ideal for schools and community groups. Planning a tour?
