Staying Safe Online: Free Community Sessions in May

If you’ve ever received an unexpected message promising fast money, prizes, or insisting you take “urgent action now”, you’re not alone — and chances are, it wasn’t genuine.

Online scams continue to trick people of all ages and backgrounds, often using persuasive language, fake urgency and realistic? looking emails or text messages.

To help locals stay one step ahead, Hinchinbrook Shire Library is hosting free Staying Safe Online sessions designed to give residents practical skills to protect themselves in the digital world.

The sessions will cover how to recognise common online scams, avoid suspicious emails, phone calls and text messages, protect personal information, create strong passwords, and stay safe when accessing digital services at home or while travelling.

Importantly, the sessions are designed to be friendly, accessible and judgement? free, with no technical expertise required.

One session will be held on Monday 18 May 2026 from 10.30 am to 11.30 am at Hinchinbrook Shire Library, 73–75 McIlwraith Street, Ingham.

A second session will follow on Wednesday 20 May 2026 from 10.30 am to 11.30 am at the Halifax Sub? Branch Library, 15 Macrossan Street, Halifax.

Scams and fraud can affect anyone, anywhere, and library staff hope the sessions will not only build confidence but also encourage conversation and awareness within the community.

Attendance is free, but bookings are encouraged. Residents can RSVP by contacting Hinchinbrook Shire Library on (07) 4776 4614.
