Public Notice - Waste Composition Survey

Hinchinbrook Shire Council advises that a residential waste composition survey will be undertaken this month to help improve waste services, increase recycling and resource recovery, and reduce contamination, and minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Audits of red-lidded and yellow-lidded recycling bins will be conducted from Monday 22 June to Wednesday 24 June 2026 on randomly selected streets across the Hinchinbrook region.

Bins may be visually inspected to assess their fullness and condition, and contents will be collected from the kerbside on your normal collection day.

The collected materials will be sorted and analysed at a Council waste facility to better understand what materials are being disposed of and whether waste and recycling bins are being used correctly.

Findings from the survey will help Council plan future waste and recycling services, target community education programs, improve resource recovery outcomes, and identify opportunities to reduce landfill disposal costs.

Following analysis, all materials will be disposed of or recycled through normal waste management processes.

This differs from bin tagging programs, as it involves the collection and sorting of bin contents rather than individual feedback to households.

No action is required from residents.

Households will not be individually notified, and all information collected will remain confidential and be reported only in aggregated form.
