Public Notice - Residential Green Waste Disposal

Published on 16 December 2025

Hinchinbrook Shire Council wishes to advise of an increase of residential green waste being piled around trees in public spaces throughout the Shire.

While grass clippings, tree branches and leaves can be beneficial as mulch for vegetables and flowers, they can harm trees.

Excessive clippings around tree bases may cause collar rot, disrupt soil temperature, introduce diseases, and restrict oxygen and water access to roots.

Council urges the community not to pile their residential grass and tree clippings around trees in streets and parks. Instead, please:

  • Dispose of clippings responsibly within your garden, or
  • Take them to Warrens Hill Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre or Halifax Resource Recovery Centre.

Residential green waste disposal is free at both facilities, and multiple loads are accepted.

Council also advises that if education efforts do not resolve repeat offences, illegal dumping enforcement measures may be applied, which can include fines under relevant legislation.

Contact Council’s Customer Service Centre on (07) 4776 4600 or email council@hinchinbrook.qld.gov.au for more information.
