Public Notice - Bin Tagging Education Program

Hinchinbrook Shire Council advises that the Bin Tagging Education Program will run from Wednesday 22 April 2026 to Wednesday 3 June 2026.

As part of the program, Council officers will carry out visual inspections of yellow-lidded recycling bins presented for collection on scheduled collection days.

Households will receive a feedback tag on their recycling bin, indicating whether items have been placed correctly.

The program aims to support better recycling habits, increase resource recovery, and reduce contamination in kerbside recycling.

Hinchinbrook Shire disposes of approximately 4,000 tonnes of kerbside waste each year.

Diverting just 10 per cent of recyclable material from the red-lidded bin to the yellow-lidded recycling bin could reduce landfill waste by up to 400 tonnes annually, helping to extend the life of the local landfill.

This program is education-focused and is designed to help residents make informed and waste-wise recycling choices.

Council encourages all residents to familiarise themselves with what can and cannot be placed in the yellow-lidded recycling bin.

Each bin tagging round runs for six weeks and includes a follow-up assessment six months later. In 2026, Council will deliver two six-week tagging rounds and two corresponding follow-up rounds.
