Public Notice - August update, JL Kelly Theatre

Hinchinbrook Shire Council is progressing works to restore and enhance the JL Kelly Theatre, helping to bring this much-loved community venue back into operation.

Following significant flood damage sustained during the February 2025 floods, the JL Kelly Theatre has remained closed while planning for its restoration was undertaken.

Council has worked to progress the project and appoint a contractor to undertake the remediation works.

Council has now awarded the contract, with works expected to commence in September 2026 and be completed by June 2027.

The works will include replacing moisture-affected flooring, restoring seating, treating mould and repairing internal finishes to return the venue to at least its pre-flood condition.

The works are jointly funded through the Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) in association with Hinchinbrook Shire Council.

In the meantime, events and performances that would ordinarily be held at the theatre have been relocated to the Hinchinbrook Shire Hall where possible, ensuring the community can continue to enjoy a range of entertainment and cultural experiences.

These remediation works mark an important milestone in restoring the JL Kelly Theatre and welcoming the community back to the cinema and entertainment venue.
