Media Statement - Festive Weather System Update #2

The following to be attributed to Hinchinbrook Local Disaster Management Group Chair, Ramon Jayo, Mayor of Hinchinbrook Shire Council.

• Hinchinbrook LDMG met this afternoon to discuss the current weather system and resolved to move to alert status to allow formal precautionary measures to be put in place to deal with the potential threat of heavy rain and possible flooding forecast.
• We received a briefing from BOM and at this stage the situation remains that whilst we know that rain is coming, where the heaviest will fall and how much will fall, and whether flooding is experienced is still uncertain pending where the convergence zone establishes upon our part of the northeastern coastline.
• So, at this stage and bearing in mind things around here can change pretty quickly, we don't believe there are any flooding concerns for the next day or so.
• So, rest easy tonight even if you start hearing a little more heavy rain on the roof through the night.
• But can I just remind you all that heavy down bursts may cause flash storm water flooding in low areas when table drains or kerb and channelling on road systems simply can't cope.
• We do anticipate that sheet flow across roads will occur during periods of torrential rain if occurring so please be extra vigilant when driving in rain and particularly at night.
