Media Release - Shovel Ready Projects Set to Roll Out Across
Published on 18 February 2026
A $3.23 million investment in community infrastructure is set to reshape Hinchinbrook, with Council preparing to deliver 13 shovel-ready projects under the Works for Queensland 2024–2027 Program.
From coastal upgrades to town-centre improvements, the projects will roll out across the Shire, targeting the places and facilities locals use every day.
Mayor Ramon Jayo said the updated program reflects Council’s continued focus on practical, community-driven investment that enhances daily life for residents across the district.
“From parks to pathways, from recreation spaces to essential services, these projects reflect what locals have been asking for,” Mayor Jayo said. “They’re real, they’re practical, and they’re ready to go.”
Across the Shire, residents will soon see early planning and design for Taylors Beach Seawalk, while a new half basketball court at Garbutt Park will provide young people with more opportunities to get active close to home.
Cultural infrastructure is also receiving attention, with the JL Kelly Theatre foyer set for a much-needed refurbishment to improve the visitor experience at one of Hinchinbrook’s most valued venues.
Design work is progressing on the Borello Park Playground Revamp, aiming to create a more modern and inclusive space for families.
Outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to enhancements at Riverview Park and growing momentum on the Palm Creek Pump Track, adding another adventure option for locals and visitors alike.
At Taylors Beach, the recently completed playground shade covering is already delivering safer, sun-smart play for children year-round.
Behind the scenes, essential groundwork is also underway. The extension of reticulated sewerage along Townsville Road forms part of Council and the Queensland Government’s Residential Activation Fund, supporting future flood?resilient housing opportunities and recognising the benefits of more resilient land for long?term planning.
“Council is delivering the trunk sewer infrastructure needed to support future residential growth; however, all internal subdivision works, approvals, and connections to this network remain the responsibility of developers,” Mayor Jayo said.
“Council’s role is to provide the major connection point not to construct sewerage infrastructure on private land or to mandate connections for existing homes.”
Additional works under the program include the Vince Corbett Park Infrastructure Upgrade that includes upgrade of existing playground and existing amenities, a half basketball court at Trebonne, improvements to the Ingham Showground carpark, and enhanced parking at Merv Whacker Park — smaller-scale projects that deliver everyday benefits and improve accessibility across the community.
“These works are all about preparing our Shire for the future,” Mayor Jayo said.
“One project at a time, we are building a stronger, more connected Hinchinbrook.”
The final suite of projects follows a recently approved variation from the Queensland Government, allowing Council to align funding with current community priorities and project readiness.
Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said that Hinchinbrook Shire Council is getting on with the job delivering from their communities.
“Thirteen projects all contributing to the cultural vitality of their communities is an outstanding achievement and a testament to what strong partnership with local governments can deliver,” Minister Leahy said.
“That’s why the Crisafulli Government is empowering our councils through our shared commitments delivering well-planned, community focused infrastructure for Queensland’s future.”
State Member for Hinchinbrook Wayde Chiesa said these projects are a great example of what can be achieved when local and state governments work together to strengthen regional communities.
“From basketball courts to beach seawalks, these thirteen projects demonstrate our region’s diverse needs and the importance of investing in community spaces that brings people together,” Mr Chiesa said.
“The Crisafulli Government is backing councils to ensure they continue to deliver essential infrastructure for their communities by creating safer, more welcoming public spaces to stay active and connect with each other.”
The Works for Queensland Program is proudly funded by the Queensland Government in partnership with Hinchinbrook Shire Council.
Project delivery will be scheduled in line with contractor availability, materials and resources, with updates to be shared as works progress.
