Media Release - $2.8m Upgrade Underway at Warrens Hill

Hinchinbrook Shire Council has begun construction of Cell 4 at the Warrens Hill Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre, a $2.8 million upgrade designed to protect the environment and ensure the landfill continues to operate safely into the future.

The new cell includes a modern, multi-layer liner system that prevents contaminants from reaching surrounding land and groundwater.

It also provides additional space, allowing the landfill to remain operational while meeting strict Queensland environmental standards.

Construction has begun, with works expected to be completed by late July 2026, weather permitting. All works are contained within the existing landfill footprint.

Hinchinbrook Shire Council Mayor Ramon Jayo said residents may notice increased activity, including trucks and machinery, but Council is managing operations to minimise disruption to normal waste services.

“This upgrade is about more than just building a new cell,” Mayor Jayo said.

“It’s about protecting the environment, keeping the landfill safe, and ensuring we can continue providing reliable waste services for our community into the future.”

Council continues to work closely with contractors and independent inspectors to ensure the project is delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with environmental approvals.

Residents can help reduce waste by avoiding single-use items, recycling correctly and using the appropriate council bins for general, recycling and green waste.
