$14.1 million Capital Works Program to deliver local projects

Hinchinbrook Shire Council will deliver a $14.1 million Capital Works Program in 2026–2027, with 49 projects focused on maintaining and improving essential infrastructure across the region.

Mayor Ramon Jayo said the program reflects a practical, back-to-basics approach, with many of the highlighted projects forming part of a broader multi-year investment.

“This is about investing in the infrastructure our community uses every day — roads, drainage, water, sewerage and community facilities,” Mayor Jayo said.

“We are focused on what matters most and that’s keeping our region functional, safe and liveable.”

Key investments include approximately:

$4 million in roads and drainage, including bridge replacement, road widening, resealing programs, drainage improvements and safety upgrades;
$6.1 million in water and sewerage infrastructure, supporting system reliability, network upgrades and growth areas;
$1.2 million in buildings and community facilities, including upgrades to Council facilities, community spaces and accessibility improvements; and
$2.1 million in community and sustainability projects, including park upgrades, recreational infrastructure, walking tracks and environmental initiatives.

Mayor Jayo said many of the projects are supported through external funding.

“More than half of this program is funded through state and federal government grants, which means we can deliver critical projects while reducing the burden on ratepayers,” he said.

“This includes more than $1.3 million in Works for Queensland projects delivering upgrades to parks, recreational spaces and community facilities across the Shire, alongside more than $5.1 million through the Residential Activation Fund to expand critical sewerage infrastructure and unlock future housing growth.”

“Among the standout projects this year is the extension of reticulated sewerage from Ingham to Toobanna, a more than $5.1 million investment that will play a key role in enabling future residential development.

“Council is also delivering the bridge replacement at Macknade Creek along Old Wharf Road, a nearly $1 million project, improving safety and connectivity for the local community.

“In addition, we are investing $1 million in a review of Council’s finance and corporate management system to strengthen long-term capability and improve service delivery.

“These projects represent our top priorities while partnering with government, delivering essential infrastructure, and planning for the long-term growth and sustainability of the Hinchinbrook Shire.”
