HLDMG - Wet Season Preparedness
Published on 12 January 2026
The Hinchinbrook Local Disaster Management Group advises that the wet season has not yet concluded, and continued preparedness remains essential.
Community members are advised to keep sandbags by storing them in a dry place, as they deteriorate very rapidly when wet.
While recent rainfall events forecasted by the Bureau of Meteorology may not have resulted in significant impacts to the Hinchinbrook region, maintaining preparedness is critical to reducing risk and ensuring a timely response
should conditions change.
Sandbags form an important part of wet season mitigation measures.
Although they may ultimately not be required, having them ready provides protection and reassurance in the face of uncertain weather conditions.
Being prepared and not needing protective measures is always preferable to needing them and not having them available.
The Local Disaster Management Group thanks the community for its cooperation and ongoing commitment to wet season readiness.
