Flying Fox Management Operations

Published on 29 April 2026

Hinchinbrook Shire Council wishes to advise residents that, due to seasonal flying fox migrations, there is a potential for increased flying fox activity within the Ingham area.

Council continues to actively monitor flying fox movements within the urban footprint and surrounding areas. Dispersal activities, including the use of audible deterrents, will be undertaken as required to manage any influxes.

Residents are encouraged to report sightings of flying foxes roosting in undesirable locations—particularly during daylight hours—by contacting Council. This will assist staff in identifying and responding to new roosting sites that may not currently be under surveillance.

Private landowners are reminded that they may discourage flying foxes from settling in trees on their property using non-destructive disturbance techniques, such as:

  • Smoke;
  • Visual deterrents (e.g. imitation predators);
  • Bright lighting; and
  • Noise from commercial or improvised products.

For safety reasons, residents are advised to secure pets during dispersal operations, which typically occur between 4.30am and 7.30am each morning.

Important: Do not attempt to touch flying foxes with bare hands under any circumstances.

Council appreciates the community’s cooperation in managing this seasonal wildlife activity.
