Upcoming Works - Mount Fox and Wallaman Falls Road
Hinchinbrook Shire Council is delivering a major program of works to improve safety, resilience and year-round access along Mount Fox Road and Wallaman Falls Road, supported through joint Australian and Queensland Government funding.
These projects will strengthen Mount Fox’s important agricultural corridor and maintain access to Wallaman Falls, Australia’s tallest single-drop waterfall and one of the region’s premier tourism destinations.
Project Overview
$18.6M Landslip Remediation Works for Mount Fox Road and Wallaman Falls Road
Funded under the joint Australian and Queensland Governments Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), the $18.6 million remediation and slope stabilisation package will address damage caused by severe weather, including:
- 35 landslip sites on Mount Fox Road
- 30 landslip sites on Wallaman Falls Road, which winds through Girringun National Park
This package forms part of DRFA Restoration of Essential Public Assets (REPA) program administered by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority.
$3.5M Mount Fox Road Upgrades (National Resilience Fund)
A further $3.5 million, secured through the National Resilience Fund, will deliver safety and resilience upgrades across 16 priority locations on Mount Fox Road.
These upgrades will support:
- Increased heavy vehicle movements associated with emerging energy precincts
- Defence Force access to training areas above the Mount Fox Range
- Safer, more reliable travel for residents, agricultural operators and visitors
Why These Works Are Needed
Mount Fox Road and Wallaman Falls Road are highly prone to landslips during the wet season, often resulting in road closures and restricted access. This affects residents, visitors, local businesses, agricultural supply chains and emergency access.
Growing traffic associated with new renewable energy projects, combined with Defence use of the route, further highlights the need for a resilient and dependable road network.
Timeline
- Construction commencement: Expected from April 2026 (subject to site conditions)
- Completion: Anticipated late 2027, weather permitting
Staged delivery will be used wherever possible to maintain access for residents and road users. Traffic management details will be shared as the project progresses.
