Date: 12 July 2018
Community announcement – planned burn
Smoke from Hinchinbrook Island National Park
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct a planned burn on Hinchinbrook Island National Park on Wednesday 18th July 2018, weather permitting, as part of the annual hazard reduction/conservation management program for parks and forests.
As a result, smoke may be seen in the Nina Bay and Nina Peak area on the north-eastern side of Hinchinbrook Island. Smoke will likely be seen for several days as the fire burns slowly around the highlands.
A section of the Thorsborne Trail between south Ramsay Bay and Little Ramsay Bay will be closed 18 -19 July 2018. QPWS Rangers will be present to manage hikers and facilitate them to move through the Thorsborne Trail.
The aim of this burn is to reduce fuel loads and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas.
This will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.
For more information, please call the North Tropical Coast Marine Park office of QPWS on 4722 5343 or 4778 5378.
