Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Heavy Rainfall and Damaging Winds

Due to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms residents are reminded to take extra care on the roads within and surrounding the Shire. 

Bureau of Meteorology have issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Heavy Rainfall and Damaging Winds. 

Issued at 12:20 pm Wednesday, 18 October 2017.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Palm Island, Ingham, Innisfail, Cardwell, Tully and Babinda.

106mm recorded in the 2 hours to 12:20pm at Poverty Hill, south of Ingham.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: 

  • Move your car under cover or away from trees
  • Secure loose outdoor items
  • Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it.
  • Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees
  • Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm
  • Beware of fallen trees and powerlines
  • For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500

The next warning is due to be issued by 3:20 pm.
