Media Release - Council Launches Vital Invasive Species Surveillance Program

9th September 2024

In a decisive step to protect the natural beauty and biodiversity of our region, Hinchinbrook Shire Council has adopted the 2024-2026 Plants and Animals Surveillance Program, targeting invasive biosecurity threats across the Shire.

This initiative is set to identify and track the presence of key invasive species, including but not limited to:

  • Pond Apple;
  • Acacia Glauca;
  • Thunbergia;
  • Hygrophila;
  • Mikania Vine;
  • Singapore Daisy;
  • Feral Pigs; and
  • Yellow Crazy Ants.

The program’s primary goal is to safeguard local ecosystems in accordance with the Biosecurity Act 2014, ensuring everyone involved in the management of invasive species is aware of their biosecurity responsibilities, as outlined in the Hinchinbrook Local Government Area Biosecurity Plan.

The next phase of the program, spanning 2024-2026, will officially launch on Monday 30 September 2024, continuing through to Wednesday 30 September 2026.

For detailed information, please visit Council’s website, Land and Pest Management page.

Together, we can protect Hinchinbrook’s natural treasures from harmful invaders.
