It was very disappointing to hear about India’s new round of subsidies to prop up its sugar industry to the detriment of everyone else. This action was taken with full knowledge and obviously total disregard of Australia’s and other supporting countries appeal to the World Trade Organisation.
Fluctuating world prices has always been difficult to the industry, but actions such as this by India are making life significantly more difficult and problematic for sugar producers.
That is why we must continue with our efforts to grow and market alternative cash crops in rotation with our cane.
By producing other crops, we can go a long way to bettering ourselves from the peaks and troughs of the international sugar markets.
For further information on alternative cropping, please visit Council’s recently concluded Herbert Valley Alternative Cropping Study which can be found on Council’s website, Agricultural Diversification page.
Council has been in consultation with the major schools within the Ingham township area regarding a review of off street parking and child pick up/drop off concerns.
Following the consultation, designs and costings for remedial works will be prepared for submission to the Queensland Government for assistance towards constructing required infrastructure under the School Transport Infrastructure Program funding scheme.
Council at its meeting held on Tuesday 27 August 2019 approved a three (3) year license agreement extension to Gumnut Nominees Pty Ltd for communication facilities on Warren’s Hill. The infrastructure supports the Italian and Christian Radio Station broadcasting facilities.
Council has resolved to lodge an expression of interest for funding under the Local Government Illegal Dumping Partnerships Program.
The Program is designed to fund more on ground presence to investigate and respond to illegal dumping occurrences and support programs to develop new ways to prevent and mitigate against illegal dumping.
I hope to see everyone out supporting the Annual Sugar City Rodeo this weekend. With events running from 6pm Friday night it is sure to be a great time for the whole family.
The official opening of the Multi Purpose Sports Arena will take place at 6.30pm Saturday 7 September 2019. As part of the opening, Council will be facilitating a range of free activities including kids craft, face painting and mechanical bull rides for anyone who is willing to take up the challenge!
I hear organisers were happy to see so many people attend the Ingham Gold Cup on Saturday 31 August 2019. Congratulations to the Herbert River Jockey Club on another well organised event. Unfortunately I was unable to make it however I look forward to seeing you all at the Family Day in November.
I had the pleasure of attending the official opening of the new Herbert River Men’s Shed on Saturday 31 August 2019 and by the way, look closely at the sign in the photo. I am told a name change may be on the cards.
Congratulations to the Committee and founding members for the establishment of such a wonderful and worthy space for the men of our community.
The local Men’s Shed provides a safe and busy environment where men can connect with friends whilst being productive, contributing to the community and maintaining an active body and mind in an atmosphere of good old-fashioned mateship.
Members of Men’s Sheds come from all walks of life and if you would like to get involved, I urge you to visit the local shed at 16-24 Challands Street, Ingham. I am sure their new building will be home to many exciting projects over the years to come.
