We are receiving many requests for public toilets in Lannercost Street and a review of surveys undertaken by previous Council’s suggest that this has been an issue for quite a while.
Council has resolved to provide for amenities, although significant divide as to where exactly same should go exists. We need your help to break the deadlock and staff will shortly be organising a simple survey seeking community feedback as to the most appropriate location. Please have your say.
State Election Priorities
With the State Elections called for 25 November 2017, Council has taken the opportunity to invite all candidates to address Council on what they plan to bring for our district. Priority topics include flying fox management; better marine access at Dungeness and Forrest Beach; and enabling of public / private ventures within National Parks, including Wallaman Falls, to allow growth of our tourism potential.
A public forum with candidates is also being hosted by the Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism on Sunday 12 November 2017 at the Kelly Theatre from 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start and I urge you to attend and to voice your views on matters important to you.
Management of bats is proving a very complex issue but to date, the State Government has not waivered from its stance that ‘we must learn to live with them’. Council understands that you, our community, do not want to live with foxes, but we are beholden to State legislation and cannot assist much in that regard under current legislation.
This Election is your opportunity to put your side of the story to the potential power brokers. Please make the most of it.
Sand Drift
Council recently approached the State Government seeking consideration to allowing a more liberal approach to sand extraction from our rivers to improve flood immunity and health of our river systems.
Whether it be the South-North East Coast sand drift or sedimentation occurring down the river systems, our neck of the woods is silting up. Dungeness and areas of the Herbert above and below Halifax are prime examples.
There is demand for sand elsewhere including overseas states such as Hawaii that import sand from the South East. Current licensing requirements are proving very problematic and prohibitive for developers to start an industry of that nature, hence Council’s request for dispensation on some issues to attempt industry establishment.
Council is currently awaiting a decision on the matter, but no doubt will now need to wait until after the State Election.

DNRM Land Revaluations
The Department of Natural Resources and Mines has informed Council of its intention to undertake a revaluation of all lands within the Shire. Individual land owners whose properties are to be affected by revaluation will be privately notified by the Department.
Further advice will be forthcoming once the revaluations are completed.
