Media Release - Telstra Switches on free public Wi-Fi in the Hinchinbrook Shire

21st December 2017

Telstra has switched on new public Wi-Fi hotspots in Ingham as part of the first stage of a public Wi-Fi network partnership with the Hinchinbrook Shire Council. Locals and visitors may access Wi-Fi at the Hinchinbrook Visitor Information Lounge at the southern end of TYTO and in the centrally located Rotary Park.

Hinchinbrook Shire Council Mayor Ramon Jayo said free public Wi-Fi is an important part of keeping Hinchinbrook’s digital economy on the right track.

“The provision of free Wi-Fi delivers the essential infrastructure to support digital uptake of Hinchinbrook’s visitor information services, as well as allowing locals and tourists to connect and share experiences online”

Telstra Area General Manager, Rachel Cliffe, said the partnership with Hinchinbrook Shire Council formed part of Telstra’s plan to bring world class connectivity to the places people live and work through the expansion of its Telstra Air® Wi-Fi network.

“This project is an example of Telstra partnering with local governments to deliver innovative programs and expand services.”

The service will provide locals with free public Wi-Fi at selected locations.

“Wi-Fi sessions at these locations will not be limited by data usage; rather people will be able to use 30 minutes per device per day at each location for free. Customers who are eligible mobile and broadband customers will be able to connect at hotspots during business hours with no time restrictions.”

“That means any eligible end user using the hotspots will be able to stream standard definition YouTube video content or music or spend time sending email and keeping track of social media.”

Mayor Ramon Jayo said Council will continue to look at opportunities to expand the free Wi-Fi network across the Hinchinbrook Shire with Telstra.

Telstra Air® is Australia’s largest Wi-Fi network and gives Telstra home broadband and mobile customers the ability to connect at more than one million hotspots in Australia and more than 19 million Fon Spots overseas.

Telstra is partnering with councils, business enterprises and governments to bring access to fast, reliable Wi-Fi to community spaces across the nation.

To access Ingham's new free public Wi-Fi simply visit the Hinchinbrook Visitor Information Lounge or Rotary Park and select the Hinchinbrook Free Wi-Fi network on your device. For more information visit the Hinchinbrook Way website
