Council is reminding people that disregard for the rules when accessing the region's beautiful beaches will not be tolerated.
There is still evidence that recreational vehicles are driving on foreshore vegetation while enjoying the privileged access we have to Hinchinbrook’s Coastal Reserves. Council and Queensland Police continue to receive reports of reckless driving, unregistered vehicles, exceeding speed limits, littering and general disregard for the protection of these sensitive natural areas. This irresponsible behaviour destabilises the sand dunes, causing coastal erosion and loss of habitat for nesting shorebirds, sea turtles and critical fauna and flora.
To minimise impacts and for your own safety, Council recommends accessing our beaches via the designated access point only, and to traverse along the beaches within two hours either side of low tide, where the sand is firm between the waterline and the high tide mark.
Avoid travelling around high tide, or in the intertidal zone. Drive according to conditions, and in a manner which does not destabilise the sand or disturb other beach users, including wildlife.
Rules are enforceable by either Queensland Police and/or Council Officers and be aware that normal road rules apply.
Please remember to:
- Travel at the recommended speed of 20km/hr (up to a maximum of 50km/hr);
- Reduce your tyre pressure when driving on sand, keeping within the manufacturer's specifications;
- Be courteous of other people utilising the beach; and
- Only leave your prints and enjoy
Do not:
- Drive on sand dunes;
- Damage or drive on vegetation;
- Disturb resting wildlife; and
- Ruin it for everyone else.
Beach users can report people doing the wrong thing to Council or Queensland Police by phone or online via the website forms.police.qld.gov.au/launch/Hooning. Offenders can expect hefty fines for not following the rules.
Council is committed to preserving and enhancing our natural Assets and appreciates the assistance of the community in achieving this goal.
