Council is inviting the community to take part in an opportunity to shape the future of Coconut Palms as part of the ongoing Coconut De-nutting Program and Reduction Strategy, adopted in April 2022. This is the third round of nominations, where Council has identified Coconut Palms that could either be maintained through regular de-nutting or removed altogether, ensuring the long term safety and beauty of our public spaces.
While Coconut Palms add a tropical charm to our Shire, they require ongoing maintenance to prevent falling coconuts, which can pose risks to public safety and property. Council’s strategy aims to find a balance between preserving the natural appeal of these trees and managing their potential hazards.
Public consultation is now open, and whether you are a local resident or just someone who enjoys our public spaces, your feedback matters. This is your chance to suggest trees for removal, negotiate maintenance, or share your thoughts on how Council manage Coconut Palms in your area. If you have specific concerns about Coconut Palms near your property, contact Council’s Public Spaces Team Leader to discuss further, or to arrange an on site meeting.
Council has logged Coconut Palms for removal or maintenance in our GIS database, which can be viewed by accessing the link provided below. The mapping will reflect any changes during the consultation period, ensuring transparency and keeping the community informed.
The consultation is open until 4.00pm Friday 11 October 2024.
Council has set a limit on the number of Coconut Palms it can maintain in the future, so your input is essential in helping us make the right decisions. Once the consultation wraps up, it is expected the removal works will commence in November 2024, based on community feedback.
