Media Release - Residents Urged Not To Become Complacent

15th March 2019

Whist we are in the midst of the wet season residents are reminded not to become complacent to the potential of further wet weather or emergency events.

Mayor Ramon Jayo said “Preparing your home is an important step towards your family being prepared for, surviving and coping with emergencies.”

“The best time to prepare your home is now. Taking steps now to secure and protect your property can improve the safety of your home during a bushfire, storm, flood or cyclone.”

In order to prepare, residents are reminded to keep areas around the home tidy and free of debris which may take flight during high winds.

Check your roof, down pipes and gutters are in good condition. Trim any trees or over hanging branches (be aware of any overhead powerlines) and fix any loose fittings.

Mayor Ramon Jayo said “Hinchinbrook Shire households can continue to access their four free virtual rubbish vouchers when cleaning up their properties. The virtual vouchers are available to be used at the Halifax Transfer Station or the Warrens Hill Waste Management Facility and can be redeemed by presentation of your licence to staff at the facility.”

Additionally residents can prepare by ensuring home, contents and car insurance is current and cover’s assets adequately. Identify where and how to turn off the mains supply for water, power and gas, ensure that emergency kits are up to date and includes all required medical supplies and essentials to last up to three days.
