Media Release - Hinchinbrook to Experience Bolshoi Ballet Epic

5th June 2019

Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) has announced Ingham will be one of eight Queensland cities and towns to welcome a performance by Russia’s mighty Bolshoi Ballet direct from QPAC’s Lyric Theatre via a free simulcast.

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said audiences throughout Queensland will have an opportunity to enjoy a live simulcast of Yuri Grigorovich’s Spartacus on Saturday 6 July 2019 from 7.00pm.

“I’m delighted that with this simulcast regional audiences in Queensland can experience one of the Bolshoi Ballet’s signature works as the company performs live on the Lyric Theatre stage at QPAC,” Minister Enoch said.

“The Bolshoi Ballet is widely considered one of the best companies in the world. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience them here in our own state.”

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said the simulcasts would open up a world-class event to audiences around the state.

“Regional communities and visitors travelling throughout Queensland will be able to enjoy this spectacular event live from Brisbane, sharing the joy of this major event across the state,” Ms Jones said.

“The Bolshoi Ballet’s performances are a highlight of the state’s It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar, which is expected to generate $800 million for Queensland’s economy in 2019.

“Opening up our major events across the state boosts Queensland’s profile as the place to experience events.”

QPAC Chief Executive John Kotzas said he hoped audiences in Ingham would make the most of the opportunity to take in the live simulcast performance by this renowned company.

“Brisbane’s last exclusive season by the Bolshoi Ballet at QPAC in 2013 was a sell-out that thrilled audiences, with thousands more Queenslanders also able to experience a performance of Bolshoi’s Le Corsaire, simulcast live to multiple regional venues across the state.

“QPAC is committed to making live performance accessible to all Queenslanders through live and digital formats for regional audiences.

“Our aim is for as many people as possible across Queensland who can’t make it to Brisbane to experience this internationally acclaimed ballet company in the convenience of their closest venue via the free live simulcast,” said Mr Kotzas.

“Simulcast audiences will see Spartacus from “the best seats” in the house. They will also enjoy exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews prior to the performance.

“Seeing the Bolshoi Ballet is an amazing opportunity in itself, but the chance to experience a staple of the company’s international touring schedule, the epic Spartacus, which showcases the Bolshoi’s scale, power and strength, is not to be missed,” said Mr Kotzas.

The 2019 QPAC International Series will see the presentation by the Bolshoi Ballet of two ballets; Spartacus (26-28 June and 4-7 July) and three-act ballet Jewels (29 – 30 June and 2-3 July) in QPAC’s Lyric Theatre, including the rare opportunity for audiences to make a weekend of it and see both ballet productions on the first weekend of the season (28 and 29 June).

The QPAC International Series is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and features on the It’s Live! In Queensland events calendar. The Series is also supported by Principal Partner MinterEllison.

The simulcast of Bolshoi Ballet’s Spartacus on Saturday 6 July is free to attend, but bookings are required.  Please contact Council’s Regional Event Coordinator on 4776 4618.
