Media Release - Council Adopts Hinchinbrook Local Government Area Biosecurity Plan

21st December 2021

Under the Biosecurity Act 2014, Councils are required to have a Biosecurity Plan for invasive biosecurity matters within their local government area. The plan provides strategic direction for the management of priority weeds and pest animals on all land tenure within the Hinchinbrook Local Government Area and has been developed for the entire community.

The annual review of the Hinchinbrook Local Government Area Biosecurity Plan (HLGABP) was held on Friday 30 April 2021 with Council and relevant stakeholders aiming to reduce the impacts and prevent the introduction and spread of invasive plants and animals within the Hinchinbrook Shire Council area through a cooperative approach from all stakeholders and the community.

The desired outcomes are for the community to be informed and knowledgeable of their General Biosecurity Obligations (GBO) and have ownership of invasive plant and animal management, for all stakeholders to be committed to undertaking coordinated management of invasive plants and animals, and for the introduction of new invasive plants and animals to be prevented, with the spread of existing issues to be managed.

On Tuesday 23 November 2021, Council adopted the 2021 HLGABP, with the next review to be held in April 2022. The current HLGABP can be found on Council’s website, Community and Environment page, under Land and Pest Management.

Partners with Council involved in the development of the HLGABP are FNQROC, Department of Resources, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Biosecurity Queensland, Department of Transport and Main Roads, HQ Plantations, Department of Environment and Science, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Terrain NRM, Herbert Cane Productivity Services Limited and Herbert River Catchment and Landcare Group.
