Media Release - Change of Date for the 2020 Ingham Show Holiday

29th May 2020

At its General Meeting on Tuesday 26 May 2020, Council resolved to apply to change the 2020 Ingham Show Holiday to a Bank Holiday on Tuesday 3 November 2020 for Melbourne Cup Day to assist with revitalising the economy.

The cancellation of the 2020 Ingham Show prompted Council to explore opportunities to change the date of the public Show Holiday on Friday 26 June 2020, to an alternative date later in the year when COVID-19 restrictions may not hamper the celebration of a community event.

Community feedback was requested on various options including leaving the Show Holiday as Friday 26 June 2020, a Bank Holiday on Tuesday 3 November 2020 for Melbourne Cup Day, or an alternative date for a Hinchinbrook Special Event.

The survey results detailed a draw for the existing Show Holiday and Melbourne Cup Day which both received 47.62% of votes.  The option for an alternative date received 4.76% of the votes. The Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Industry Executive indicated their preference to move from a public holiday to assist small businesses with penalty rate payments and to benefit from increased trade later in the year.

Mayor Ramon Jayo said “Council’s decision to seek to change the scheduled Show Holiday on 26 June 2020 to a Bank Holiday on Tuesday 3 November 2020 was made on the basis that it may provide a better opportunity for the community to celebrate together, later in the year when COVID-19 restrictions would hopefully be almost non-existent.  Council will work with the community to ensure a large cross-section of businesses can benefit from an event that increases trade for local businesses and suppliers”.

Council thanked the community for their response and appreciated input from the Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce from a business perspective.

A Bank Holiday is considered a holiday for financial institutions and public services, however a normal working day for general businesses.  It would then be up to the business owners or managers to decide if the business operates for that day.

Council has applied to the Office of the Industrial Relations Office for a Bank Holiday and is awaiting results of the application. Once these results are received, the community will be advised of the outcome.
