Media Release - Budget Delivers Program to Progress Job Opportunities, Economic Growth and Financial Sustainability

Hinchinbrook Shire Council’s Budget, adopted today, delivers a program to progress the creation of job opportunities and economic growth through diversification, whilst remaining restrained in a tight economic environment.

Mayor Ramon Jayo said ‘Council’s priority for this budget has been to ensure that planning for the sustainable future of our region, through economic diversification opportunities continue as well as ensuring services to the community and infrastructure are maintained at the appropriate level, in accord with community expectation.’

‘Budgeted for the 2018/2019 financial year is $2.5million for the Water Security Project, impacting the Shire wide water network. The project will see bores added to the Como Road bore field and upgrades made to the Ingham Water Treatment Plant ensuring a robust water supply and improved water quality for future generations.’

‘Roads remain a key priority in this year’s budget with a view to improving our road network.’

‘Budgeted road safety items include $50,000 for pavement sealing and ongoing improvement to the Mt Fox range, $100,000 for the sealing of turnouts on arterial roads, $60,000 for kerb crossing improvements to increase accessibility and $54,000 for Palm Creek walkway safety improvements.’

‘District marine facilities will see upgrades with a carryover of $700,000 included for the installation of the Dungeness pontoon; $100,000 earmarked for dredging at Taylors Beach and $110,000 for maintenance of local jetties.’

‘Capital Projects to enhance our community’s lifestyle and the liveability of our region are proposed at $1.6 million.’

‘Projects include $200,000 for the installation of additional playground facilities at Vince Corbett Park; $50,000 for the Lucinda swimming enclosure; $300,000 for CBD toilet facilities and $300,000 for works in Lannercost and Herbert Street which will include age friendly seating and shaded seating areas.’

‘The budget also provides for ongoing capital for Council to pursue economic diversification activities previously commenced in the fields of tourism, events, business facilitation and agriculture.’

‘Priority projects are investigations and planning for the Airport and the Motor Sport Precinct, as well as recreational and adventure tourism opportunities and agricultural diversity programs.’

‘To target environmental issues, $240,000 will be allocated to the management of animals and overgrown allotments and $760,000 for management of pests and weeds throughout the district. A further $750,000 is allocated for remediation works at the Warren’s Hill Waste Management Facility to address long term environmental requirements.’
