Mayor's Message - Council Connections 21 August 2019

21st August 2019

Multipurpose Sports Arena Lighting

Lighting installation to the Multipurpose Sports Arena has been completed and from all reports the initial turning on that occurred last Thursday night was pretty powerful.

The official opening of the facility will take place on Saturday 7 September 2019 shortly before the “Bucking of the Bulls” at the annual Sugar City Rodeo at 6pm.

It will be a fantastic night with plenty of thrills and spills so I hope to see you all there.

Solar Farm Feasibility

You may recall that Council was looking into the feasibility of producing electricity for sale to the market as a means of offsetting Council’s own ever increasing power costs. One consideration under investigation is the use of undeveloped land, such as former waste refuse sites, as solar farm sources, including the Fairford Road site.

Power marketing is a complex area and Council’s due diligence is continuing. An expression of interest has now been released seeking market feedback on potential revenue and commercial arrangements that are possible locally if a farm was developed and discussions with Ergon on site specific matters and particular infrastructure requirements are proceeding.

No Slash Zone Register

Landowners are concerned about the rapid and rampant spread of the noxious weed Navua Sedge.

The concern is well founded as this weed is known for its ability to invade and take over natural pasture and to also stall cane harvesters by dense wrapping around base cutters.

Seed can be dispersed through animal activity as well as footwear and machinery. Road side slashing activities are commonly blamed for spread along road corridors.

To mitigate potential spread by Council slashers, Council has adopted a No Slash Zone Register enabling landowners with road frontage to their property, to nominate areas where no slashing is to occur. Please note that the No Slash Zone Register does not apply to State controlled roads.

For further information, please visit Council’s website, No Slash Zone Register page or call Council Officers on 4776 4671.

For further information on identifying and managing pest and weed species visit Council’s Land and Pest Management page.

LAWMAC

A very warm welcome to the delegates and guests attending our district to take part in the Local Authority Waste Management Advisory Committee (LAWMAC) workshops at TYTO over Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week.

This year, hosted by Hinchinbrook Shire Council, the workshop brings together all Local Government waste managers for discussion and information sharing on matters affecting the management of community waste for better future outcomes.

The most important reason for proper waste management is to protect the environment and the health and safety of our population.

Whilst attending the workshops, delegates will take part in tours to Victoria Mill and Lucinda Port, and a big thank you to Wilmar and Qld Sugar Limited for your assistance in demonstrating waste management practices in sugar manufacturing and operations.

Vietnam Veteran’s Day

Saturday 18 August 2019 was the commemoration of Vietnam Veterans Day, a day to remember all those brave Australian men and women who served our nation throughout the Vietnam War, with a local service being held at the Memorial Gardens Cenotaph.

The Battle of Long Tan was fought on 18 August 1966 and marks a moment of great courage and sacrifice for Australia in a war that was filled with tragedy and loss. We honour those soldiers who fought and died that day. We pause to remember all those affected by the war, their treatment upon returning home, and the wounds inflicted on our nation.

Let us never forget that the freedom we enjoy today as a nation is due only to the efforts and sacrifice of such individuals.
