Council Connections - Mayor's Message 5 August 2020

5th August 2020

On Friday 31 July 2020, Council hosted His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland and his wife Mrs Kaye de Jersey, during their three day blitz up the Bruce Highway from Townsville to Cairns.

Choosing to stay overnight in Ingham, the vice-regal party commenced Friday morning with a briefing in the Council Chambers with Councillors at 8.30am after which they visited students at Ingham State Primary School.

A morning tea was held in the Shire Hall, attended by Order of Australia Medal and previous Hinchinbrook Australia Day Shire Citizen Award recipients, as well as representatives from some schools, scouts and sporting associations. Afterwards, His Excellency also met with Emergency Services crews at the Ingham Fire Station, and then enjoyed a lovely working lunch at one of our renowned cafe’s before leaving to continue their tour north.

Taylors Beach Dredging

Maintenance dredging of Victoria Creek navigation channel is set to commence on Thursday 13 August 2020 weather permitting. Works will be undertaken by local contractor Timrith Transport during low tide periods between Thursday 13 August and Thursday 20 August 2020. Usage of the boat ramp during this time may be impacted, however all efforts will be made to minimise this during works.

Trebonne Footpath Connectivity

I am pleased to advise of completion of the programmed sections of footpath upgrades at Trebonne, with only minor works for beautification continuing to be carried out. Construction crews are now ready to commence on the link from the Trebonne Basque Handball Court into the existing footpath network, including provision of seating.

TYTO Facilities

Statistics that have been published in the studies developed by Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) show that Visitor Information Centres are less frequently used when compared to alternative means of providing visitor information, such as digital marketing. The studies suggest that priorities and delivery of services must be assessed to remain
competitive and relevant. Staff are actively assessing the relevance of our Visitor Information Centre services in its current delivery, in comparison with the studies undertaken by TEQ regarding the relevance of Visitor Information Centres. Council recently resolved to call for Expressions of Interest in the next two weeks regarding the use of the TYTO Visitor Information Centre and Cafe facilities. This will assist Council in informing any future considerations regarding the relevance of the Visitor Information Centre and how its service is delivered by inviting interested parties to propose future use cases for the facility.

New Playground Equipment

New playground infrastructure at Rotary Park, as Council’s nominated project under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program for the sum of $378,323 (excl. GST), has been approved. The works will include landscape enhancement, irrigation throughout, playground enhancement, ancillary furniture and connecting formed paths as required.

2021 Ingham Show Day Public Holiday

It is pleasing to advise that Friday 2 July 2021 has been nominated as the 2021 Ingham Show Day Public Holiday.

Tennis Upgrade to Lighting

Council has resolved to contribute the sum of $20,000 to the Ingham Tennis Association towards upgrading lighting at the courts in the 2020-2021 financial year. This is conditional upon the Association’s application to other parties for further funding towards the project being successful.

Celebrating Seniors Week 2020

For the first time in its 60-year history, Queensland’s annual celebration of Seniors is going virtual, with celebrations taking place from Saturday 15 to Sunday 23 August 2020.  As COVID-19 restrictions have seen many older people in self-isolation, never has it been more important to ensure people remain connected and not become segregated. Council on the Ageing (COTA) together with Queensland Performing Arts Council (QPAC) are presenting a free online event to mark the commencement of Seniors Week 2020 on Saturday 15
August 2020 at 10.30am. From the comfort of your own home, Seniors may join the morning tea by registering at https://www.qpac.com.au/event/drawn_together_20/
