Council Connections - Mayor's Message 19 August 2020

18th August 2020

Vietnam Veterans Day, Parliament House Visit, NQ Waste Strategy 2020-2030

Vietnam Veterans Day Tuesday 18 August 2020 was the commemoration of Vietnam Veterans Day, a day to remember all those brave Australian men and women who served our nation throughout the Vietnam War, with a local service being held at the Memorial Gardens Cenotaph.

The Battle of Long Tan was fought on 18 August 1966 and marks a moment of great  courage and sacrifice for Australia in a war that was filled with tragedy and loss. We honour those soldiers who fought and died that day. We pause to remember all those affected by the war, their treatment upon returning home, and the wounds inflicted on our nation.

Let us never forget that the freedom we enjoy today as a nation is due only to the efforts and sacrifice  of such individuals.

Parliament House Visit – Cr Brown

Councillor Mary Brown took part in the North Queensland Delegation promoting the region’s key projects and policies across the state political spectrum at Parliament House in Brisbane  last week.

Meeting with a range of industry leaders including the Premier, to discuss the vision and opportunities for North Queensland and steps to support the region’s economic recovery was the topic of conversation.

Illegal Dumping

Reports of illegal dumping of rubbish throughout the Shire continue to be received. This has been an ongoing issue and a great concern due to detrimental impacts on the environment.
Investigations into illegal dumping have recommenced.

Abergowrie State School

Mayor Jayo recently attended the opening of a nature sensory playground at Abergowrie State School. It was pleasing to see the next generation excited to be involved in a project that creates a more diverse learning environment.

Hinchinbrook Way Ambassadors

A Morning Tea for Hinchinbrook Way Ambassadors was held on Friday 14 August 2020 to welcome Ambassadors in returning to volunteering with Council. The morning tea also outlined Council’s future vision for the Ambassador Program and the relevant changes that have occurred during the closure period due to COVID-19.

NQ Waste Strategy 2020-2030

A region-wide focus to develop the key strategies to assist in determining the waste priorities for North Queensland over the next ten years has been prepared for public consultation. The Strategy supports the development of a circular economy intended to create jobs, reduce pressure on landfill and the environment, and works towards the Queensland Government’s 2050 waste targets. Community consultation concludes Friday 18 September 2020. Visit Council’s website Public Consultations page to have your say.

Prepare. Act. Survive

Bushfire season has officially begun, and residents are reminded to prepare. Bushfires that previously impacted communities from 2010 to 2019, as well as planned burns have all contributed to the reduction of bushfire hazard in the Hinchinbrook Shire. This does not mean that we become complacent! To make your Bushfire Survival Plan and for more  information, please refer to the Rural Fire Service website: www.ruralfire.qld. gov.au
