A dedicated group of 20 people hit the beach for another Reef Check Australia's Clean-Up event on Saturday 30 October 2021.
1,659 items were collected including 149 cigarette butts/filters, 75 plastic lids, 58 pieces of footwear (mostly single flip flops) and 675 pieces of hard plastic remnants. Larger items included parts of a fibreglass boat, abandoned white goods and even car parts.
Council would like to thank all the volunteers, Reef Check Australia for their participation, and Forrest Beach Hotel who put on a sausage sizzle and provided free drinks to the volunteers.
The Crystal Creek Hut Owner's Association's Clean-up event took place Saturday 6 November 2021 at the Crystal Creek Huts and Campground.
A total of 340kg of waste and about 5m3 of scrap metal was collected thanks to the dedication of the 17 volunteers who participated in the event.
The area is starting to look clean and tidy, so let's hope it stays that way.
Council would like to thank all the volunteers and the Crystal Creek Hut Owner's Association.
The Hon. Scott Stewart MP, Minister for Resources and Mayor Ramon Jayo conducted the Taylors Beach Foreshore Projects Official Opening on Saturday 7 November 2021 in conjunction with the Taylors Beach Foreshore Garage Sale Trail.
The initiative behind this project was to provide improved amenities for families of the Hinchinbrook region and enhance visitor experience to our district, in keeping with Council’s priorities of economic diversification.
The project, funded under the Queensland Government’s 2019-2021 Works for Queensland Program, will provide the community with a valuable facility enhancing the liveability of our Shire.
The Taylors Beach Foreshore Garage Sale took place on Saturday 7 November 2021 with high visitation. There was roughly 15 stalls selling a variety of pre-loved goods, including books, toys and clothes. Council's stall received 91 manual votes for the Don't Waste Hinchinbrook Photo Competition.
Bin tagging is now complete, and Council congratulates those residents who qualified in the draw for $50 ‘Best Bin’ vouchers generously donated by the Lucinda Hotel.
Those with a red bin containing no or minimal recyclables, and a yellow bin with only recyclables and little contamination were entered with the winners to be drawn this coming week.
Whilst we had a huge number of households doing the right thing, we as a community still have more work to do to bring our contamination rates down to an acceptable level.
A special shout out to Forrest Beach and Toobanna, these suburbs' overall bin contamination and recycling rates were fantastic. Well done!
On Friday 19 November 2021, seven Hinchinbrook residents attended a guided community tour of the RE.Group MRF Facility.
Attendees found out where their recyclables end up and witnessed the amazing facility in action.
Council would like to thank those residents who attended the MRF Community Tour.
In support of local businesses, Council placed all attendees names in a draw to win a $50 Hinchinbrook Way Voucher which can be redeemed within the Shire at participating businesses.
The $50 Hinchinbrook Way Voucher was presented to Robert Young of Forrest Beach.
Residents are advised that Council will be trialling reduced hours at the WHLRRC commencing Monday 10 January 2022 with the new business hours being 8.00am to 5.00pm, seven days a week.
