Seniors Week

Hinchinbrook Shire Council proudly celebrates Seniors Week 2017. Seniors Week is an opportunity for Queenslanders of all ages to join together and celebrate the valuable contributions of older people. In 2017, Seniors Week will be celebrated from Saturday 19 to Sunday 27 August.

Seniors Week aims to:

  • improve community attitudes towards older people and ageing
  • facilitate community participation and activity by older people, including those from Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships

Seniors Week is a great opportunity for older Queenslanders to explore programs and services, events and activities and connect with people of all ages and backgrounds. This year at TYTO we have a number of free events for seniors, including a short guided TYTO wetlands tour at 8.00am on Saturday 19 August where you can immerse yourself in nature and discover the unique flora and fauna that inhabits the TYTO Wetlands. With extensive walking tracks, bird hides and viewing platforms, it is a great way to get up close and personal with the wildlife we have in our region. Bookings are essential, call 4776 4792 to secure your spot.

Other events include Beginners eSkills classes – basic computer lessons designed for ease, 10.00am - 11.30am Wednesday 23 August, a Special Art Masterclass with Dr Barbara Cheshire learning about Acrylic Painting Techniques 10.00am - 3.00pm Thursday 24 August and a Seniors Morning Tea and Trivia 10.00am - midday Friday 1 September 2017.

A range of other activities and self-guided tours can be enjoyed throughout TYTO at no charge and at your leisure daily. Visit the Hinchinbrook Visitor Information Lounge for more information.

Ingham State High School, Year 7 students recently welcomed Mayor Ramon Jayo to the school to discuss important issues within the local community. Significant issues such as graffiti vandalism, environmental concerns and a lack of social avenues in the community for their age group, were discussed in detail with the Mayor.
