Farewell to Canossian Sisters, Request for Progress Association Members and School Holiday Library Workshops

Ingham Renal Dialysis Unit Open

On Thursday I attended the commissioning of the Ingham Renal Dialysis Unit at the Ingham Hospital.

I would like to thank the Ingham Health Service for making this facility available for our community.

Thank you also to everyone involved in lobbying for the unit and bringing the project to reality.

It is an essential facility for the health and well being of members of our community.

Travelling to Townsville back and forth for treatment is obviously very taxing on a number of fronts, not just on a person’s health, but also their family and loved ones.

Hopefully lives will be made a lot easier for our local residents necessitating the treatment.

Thank you again to everyone on this magnificent achievement.

Farewell to Canossian Sisters

It was a sad day at Trebonne this past Saturday as many members of the community gathered to farewell Sister Angela and Sister Rita whom are the last of the Canossian Daughters of Charity to reside and work in our Shire.

The Canossian Sisters first arrived in our district in 1951 and contributed significantly to our community through their work in pastoral, education and aged care activities.

The Sisters resided and operated out of the premises they established at Canossa in Trebonne.

Thank you for all your good work in our district and we wish you well in the future.

Lucinda Progress Association needs Committee Members

I recently attended the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Lucinda Progress Association held at the Lucinda Hotel, together with Councillors Brown and Marbelli.

The meeting resolved to defer the AGM to Sunday 22 May 2022 for the purpose of election of new office bearers, as no nominations came forward.

If the office bearer positions are not filled, the Lucinda Progress Association will cease to exist.  That means that more than likely, the Lucinda markets will be no more, Christmas Carols will most likely not be held, nor will other fundraising events towards benefitting the general Lucinda community to which it has become accustomed through the good work of Progress over many many years.

It would be of significant detriment to the community if this were to occur.

I urge Lucinda residents to step up and nominate to ensure the Association continues whether through nomination to office, or general support of the committee to conduct its community activities.

For further information or to nominate please contact Terri Sams on 0407 169 777.

Rotary Park Fountain Turned Blue for World Moyamoya Day

Rotary Park Fountain was dyed blue on Friday 6 May 2022 to acknowledge Australia’s World Moyamoya Day and spark conversations about this rare disease within our community.

Moyamoya is a progressive cerebrovascular disorder caused by blocked arteries.

For further information, please visit www.moyamoyaaustralia.org.au.

Responsible Travel Survey

Tourism Australia and Townsville Enterprise, the regional tourism organisation representing Hinchinbrook as part of Townsville North Queensland, are conducting a research project on the impact of tourism on the local environment, community, and culture.

The feedback will help to tailor communications for travellers in specific regions to educate and encourage responsible and respectful travel.

This nation-wide survey is open to all business owners across all industry sectors, leaders and residents.

Now more than ever, it is critical to have a proactive approach for how the tourism sector, its partners, and stakeholders face the future positively and sustainably.

To assist, please complete the short survey by Friday 20 May 2022 at https://bit.ly/3shEIlk.

Feral Pig Aerial Shoot to Commence in June

Council, in co-operation with the Department of Environment and Science and the Department of Resources, intend to conduct an aerial shoot to control feral pigs.

The areas covered during this program will include “The Orient”, Lamari’s on Suthers Road, “Mungalla”, Accornero’s on Abswold Road, and parcels of land that are under the management of participating organisations between and adjacent to Palm Creek to the North, and Insulator Creek to the South.

This program will take place from Tuesday 7 June 2022 to Wednesday 8 June 2022 between the hours of 5.00am and 7.00pm each day, weather permitting.

To ensure the safety of the public while this program is being conducted, access to the National Parks Estate, Bronte Road, and the Halifax Bay Wetlands will be closed during these times. Access to huts on Bronte Road will be permitted outside of the planned control times.

Should you require any further information or clarification concerning this control program, please contact Council’s Biosecurity Team Leader, Matthew Buckman on 4776 4740 for the necessary assistance.
