Hinchinbrook Acquisitive Art Competition
The Hinchinbrook Acquisitive Art Competition is an annual event presented by the Hinchinbrook Shire Council in association with the Rotary Club of Ingham Inc.
Entries in the competition are on public exhibition for two weeks following the judging, at Gallery Hinchinbrook in the TAFE building in Townsville Road, Ingham.
There are nine sections, four of them acquisitive, and catering to all media including pottery and photography. Prizes are also awarded to the most popular vote and the most promising local (resident of the Hinchinbrook Shire) artist. The major prize is $1000 and is non-acquisitive.
The competition was first held in 1977 when the State Government asked all local authorities in Queensland to donate a work of art to the new Parliament House in Brisbane. Hinchinbrook Shire Council decided to hold a competition to acquire a painting for Parliament House and hence the annual art competition was born.
Since then there has been 29 competitions (it was not held in 1978 nor 1986 due to remodeling of the Shire Hall) with the Rotary Club of Ingham Inc. becoming a co-sponsor in 1979.
This region is home to many very talented artists and the Hinchinbrook Shire Council is committed to promoting their work. The Hinchinbrook Acquisitive Art Competition is an integral part of this plan and we are keen to see it continue to expand and improve for many years to come.
